5 Bathroom Safety Tips for Infants & Young Children
For young children and infants, the bathroom is meant to be a fun place, as they love playing with water. However, there have been several cases of infant death due to bathroom hazards, like drowning in the bathtub. Therefore, you must follow some precautionary measures to prevent injury or bathroom accidents. The simplest way to avoid bathroom incidents and injuries is to make the room inaccessible to the child unless accompanied by an adult.
Below are the top five bathroom safety tips for infants and young children!
Do not leave your child unattended: Just three inches of extra water is enough to submerge a child. Therefore, never leave your child unattended in the bathroom, even for a moment. For instance, someone may be ringing the doorbell, and you may be tempted to quickly go and check who it is. However, do not commit this mistake; instead, take him with you to check on the person.
Beware of the slips and falls: If an infant or young child is in your home, immediately install no-slip strips on the bottom of the bathtub. You can also install a cushioned cover over the water faucet to avoid injuries if your child bumps his head against it. Also, always close the toilet lid and install a lid lock; otherwise, your child may lose their balance and fall in.
Maintain a suitable water temperature: Adjust the water heater settings so that the maximum temperature at the faucet is not beyond 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Always test the water with your wrist to check if it is not hot; ideally, it should be warm. However, if your child is old enough to turn on the faucets by himself, get him into a habit of starting the cold water before the hot.
Medicine and toiletry storage: If you store any medicines in the bathroom, ensure they have a lid on them with safety caps. Please note that these caps are not childproof; therefore, keep all the medicines and cosmetics in a locked cabinet high and out of your toddler’s reach. Do not store items you regularly use, including shampoos, soaps, and toothpaste, in the same cabinet.
Unplug the safety appliances when not in use: You may use electrical appliances, like hair dryers and razors, in your bathroom. When you are not using them, unplug them and store them in a cabinet equipped with a safe look. We also suggest using them in a room where there is no water usage or installing only special bathroom wall sockets that reduce the probability of electrical injury when the appliance comes in contact with water.
